Rainy Day Adventures

Fun Things to Do on Rainy Days in the Northern Outer Banks

Rain, rain, go away….  What?  Don’t let a little rain put a damper on your Northern Outer Banks vacation. In fact, those raindrops might be just the excuse you need to discover a new adventure…. visit some of the attractions, shops, restaurants, and family fun activities that you might otherwise miss.

So, grab an umbrella, round up your crew, and go have some fun! Whether you’re dodging a quick afternoon shower or settling in for a drizzly day, there are plenty of ways to keep those vacation vibes going.

Step Inside a Good Story

Rain outside? Perfect timing for a little exploring inside!

Make your way to Historic Corolla Park, where some of the Northern Outer Bank’s most fascinating stories are waiting to be discovered. You can easily spend several hours hopping from one attraction to another—and you might learn a thing or two along the way.

Tour Whalehead, the beautifully restored 1920s-era historic home overlooking the Currituck Sound. Then step inside the Currituck Maritime Museum, where boats, fishing, hunting, lifesaving stations, and generations of life on the water tell the story of Currituck’s maritime heritage.

Nearby, the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education offers another look at what makes this place so special, from its natural environment and wildlife to the outdoor traditions that have long been part of Currituck County.

And if the weather cooperates, head over to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse! Climb the 220 steps to the top and you may be rewarded with dramatic post-rain views stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Currituck Sound.

Take the Fun to the Mainland

Feeling adventurous? Pile everyone into the car, turn up the vacation playlist, and head to the Northern Outer Banks mainland for a rainy-day road trip.

Monster truck fans won’t want to miss Digger’s Dungeon, home of the legendary Grave Digger. Explore the world of one of the most famous monster trucks around and add a little horsepower to your day.

Next stop: Flipper’s Arcade in Grandy, where arcade and video games, pinball, and laser tag can transform a gray afternoon into some colorful family competition. Parents, consider yourselves warned—the kids may not be the only ones determined to top the leaderboard.

And don’t automatically cross H2OBX Waterpark off your list because you see a few raindrops. You’re planning to get wet anyway! Operating conditions can change when storms or lightning are nearby, so check with the waterpark before you head out.

Sip, Savor & Let It Pour

There’s something extra cozy about settling in with a good drink and a delicious meal while the rain taps against the windows.

Explore Currituck’s wine, craft beer, and spirits scene and sample locally inspired beverages by the glass or flight. Add an appetizer, linger over dinner, or simply find a comfortable spot and raise a glass to having nowhere that you need to be.

There are so many great restaurants to try.  Find a new favorite, and make that rainy afternoon all about good food and good company.  Because we all know that vacation calories don’t count.

Shop Your Way Through the Showers

Here’s your official excuse for a little retail therapy.  You’re welcome. 😊

Corolla’s shopping villages and boutiques are filled with vacation finds, coastal treasures, and plenty of things you didn’t know you needed until you spotted them.  Search for locally made treats, coastal artwork, sea glass jewelry, books and puzzles, beachwear, home décor, gifts, and the perfect Northern Outer Banks souvenir. Take your time, wander from shop to shop, and turn a rainy afternoon into a treasure hunt.

Bonus points if you find something that makes everyone back home a little jealous of your vacation.

Make Your Vacation Home the Destination

Sometimes the best rainy-day adventure involves fuzzy socks and absolutely nowhere to go.  Head back to your vacation home, change into something comfortable, and see what entertainment is already waiting for you. Depending on your rental, that could mean a game room, theater, pool table, covered deck, or other fun amenities.

Start a family card or board-game tournament. Build a giant puzzle. Declare a movie marathon. Curl up with the book you’ve been meaning to read. Or grab a cup of coffee, sit on the covered porch, and enjoy the sound of the rain.  Then comes the most important decision of the day: pizza or ice cream?  We vote for both.

Chase the Rainbow

One of the best things about coastal weather is that it rarely stays the same for long.  A rainy morning can turn into a gorgeous afternoon, and passing storms often leave behind incredible skies.

When you see the clouds starting to break, grab your camera and head outside. Hunt for rainbows, take a post-rain walk, breathe in that fresh coastal air, or find a spot in Historic Corolla Park and watch the sky change colors.  You may discover that the day you thought was going to be a washout ends with one of your favorite vacation memories—and one spectacular sunset.

Rain or Shine, Vacation Is Still On

Sometimes a few raindrops lead to the adventures you didn’t know you were looking for.   Explore a museum. Discover a local shop. Challenge the family to an arcade showdown. Taste something new. Order the pizza. Eat ice cream. Chase a rainbow. Slow down and enjoy being together.  And when the sun comes back out?   Your beach chair will be waiting.

Rain or shine, there’s always something fun waiting for you in the Northern Outer Banks.
