A beach vacation is even better when the whole family can come along –including your four-legged family members! Dogs and beaches are a perfect match. There’s nothing quite like morning runs or walks with your pup, splashing through the surf, or playing catch along the shoreline. Their excitement is contagious.
So, if finding a pet sitter or a boarding facility is keeping you from planning your next getaway, we have good news: the Northern Outer Banks is a fantastic destination for travelers with pets. From miles of beautiful beaches to pet-friendly accommodations, it’s easy to bring your furry companion along for the adventure.

Many vacation rental homes throughout the Northern Outer Banks welcome pets, making it simple to find a comfortable home away from home. Just check with your rental company about pet-friendly options. Prefer a hotel stay? The Hampton Inn, the Inn at Corolla and the Corolla Village Inn offer select pet-friendly rooms.
Of course, a few simple guidelines help keep our beaches safe and enjoyable for everyone. Dogs are welcome on the beaches of the Northern Outer Banks but must remain on a leash at all times. Leashes not only help keep your pet safe, but they also make it easier to comply with local regulations regarding the famous Corolla Wild Horses.
When visiting the northern beaches, keep an eye out for these majestic animals and remember to always stay at least 50 feet away from the Corolla wild horses at all times. This distance requirement applies to both people and pets. Keeping your dog leashed helps protect the horses, your pet, and the natural environment they call home.
As with any pet-friendly destination, please carry waste bags and clean up after your pet. A little preparation goes a long way toward preserving the beauty of our beaches for everyone to enjoy.
Many dogs love the water, and a swim can be great exercise during your vacation. If your pup enjoys splashing in the surf, be sure to stay close to shore and watch for changing ocean conditions. Rip currents can be dangerous for both people and pets.
Beyond beach walks and games of fetch, you’ll find plenty of pet-friendly experiences throughout the area, including outdoor dining spots, local attractions, events, and activities where your furry companion is welcome to join the fun.
