Mackerel Walkway provides public pedestrian access to the beach from Lighthouse Drive in Corolla’s Whalehead community. Visitors reach the ocean by following a wooden walkway across the dune area, providing a defined route that protects the surrounding dunes while offering convenient pedestrian beach access. There is no dedicated public parking lot at the walkway. Visitors should expect a simpler access point without a bathhouse, public restrooms or shower facilities. Seasonal lifeguard service is typically available at this beach location during the summer season. Mackerel does have an off-season vehicle drive-over ramp, generally October 1 through April 30. Visitors should always follow posted signs because vehicle access can be affected by beach conditions.
