The Best of The Northern OBX

A Coastal Escape for Every Season

When I first set foot on the Northern Outer Banks, I knew I had stumbled onto something extraordinary. This stretch of North Carolina’s coast feels like a secret worth sharing—wild yet welcoming, timeless yet fresh with every visit. Each time I return, I uncover something new that makes me fall in love all over again. Here are ten highlights that make the Northern Outer Banks the best destination for anyone, in any season.

Top 10 Best

Beautiful Remote Beaches

There’s nothing like the hush of waves on a nearly empty shoreline. Walking along these wide, windswept beaches, I often feel as though I have the entire coast to myself. The remoteness invites me to slow down, breathe deeply, and sink into the rhythm of the ocean. Whether bundled in a sweater in autumn or basking in summer’s warmth, these beaches are the very definition of serenity.

Corolla Wild Horses

One of my most unforgettable experiences was watching the Corolla wild horses roam freely across the dunes. These majestic creatures are living history, descendants of Spanish mustangs brought here centuries ago. Seeing them up close—manes blowing in the salt air—was both humbling and exhilarating, a reminder that the Outer Banks still holds untamed wonders.

Seafood and BBQ

Food here tastes like tradition with a twist of coastal freshness. I’ll never forget a meal of just-caught shrimp tossed in butter, followed the next day by tender Carolina pulled pork with tangy vinegar sauce. The Northern Outer Banks is a place where seafood and barbecue don’t compete—they complement each other, offering the perfect balance of surf and turf flavors that keep me coming back hungry for more.

Historic Sites & Museums

History is alive here, woven into the landscape. Climbing the Currituck Beach Lighthouse gave me sweeping views that made the climb worth every step. Just down the road, the museums at Historic Corolla Park—Whalehead, the Currituck Maritime Museum, and the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education—told stories of resilience, adventure, and life on the coast. Each stop left me more connected to the people and traditions that shaped this place.

Coastal Shopping

Tucked among the dunes and boardwalks, I found local shops filled with treasures—handcrafted jewelry, coastal art, and unique gifts that reflect the spirit of the sea. Shopping here feels personal, not commercial, and every item carries a memory of my time along the shore.

Watersports & Adventure

The waters of the Currituck Sound called to me one breezy afternoon, and I couldn’t resist. Paddling a kayak across glassy waters while herons soared overhead made me feel like part of the ecosystem itself. Adventure thrives here, from kiteboarding to paddleboarding, and it’s impossible not to be swept up in the thrill of it all.

Luxury Accommodations

At the end of the day, retreating to a luxury beach house with sweeping ocean views was pure magic. Cozy fireplaces in winter, sprawling decks in summer—these accommodations blend comfort with elegance, making it easy to feel both pampered and at home. But luxury here isn’t limited to vacation homes. The boutique inns of Corolla and Currituck County offer a more intimate, charming experience. Staying in an inn meant waking up to personalized hospitality, warm Southern breakfasts, and the kind of local recommendations that made me feel like part of the community.

Golf by the Coast

One of my favorite surprises in the Northern Outer Banks was discovering just how spectacular the golf is here. Tee boxes overlook marshes and waterways, fairways weave through maritime forests, and ocean breezes add both challenge and beauty. In Corolla, The Currituck Club is a must-play, with its breathtaking coastal views and championship-level course designed by Rees Jones. Over on the mainland, courses like Kilmarlic Golf Club and The Pointe Golf Club are just as stunning, with lush landscapes and welcoming clubhouses that make you want to linger long after your round is finished.

Sipping the Local Flavors

No trip here feels complete without indulging in local sips. At Sanctuary Vineyards, I tasted wines crafted from coastal breezes and sun-soaked grapes. At Buffalo Distillery, I sampled small-batch spirits rooted in North Carolina heritage. Each glass told a story of land and community, and it was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Trails & Nature Walks

The Northern Outer Banks isn’t just about beaches—it’s also home to some of the most peaceful trails I’ve ever walked. The Currituck Banks Estuary Trail in particular left me in awe. Strolling along the boardwalk through maritime forest and salt marsh, I could hear songbirds and spot crabs skittering below. It felt like stepping into a secret world where nature still reigns.

The Northern Outer Banks isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience. With its blend of wild beauty, rich history, delicious cuisine, outdoor adventures, and coastal luxuries, it offers something for everyone, any time of year. For me, it has become more than a place to visit—it’s a place to return to, season after season, always finding something new to love.
