10 Must-Do Fall Activities in the NorthernOBX

1. Watch the sunset over the Currituck Sound

Settle in at a long dock or gazebo and enjoy a peaceful sunset glow—pink, orange, and purple hues reflecting off the sea grasses and autumn sky make for an unforgettable evening.

2. Climb the Currituck Beach Lighthouse

Ascend 220 steps to the top of this majestic 1875 red-brick lighthouse and take in sweeping views of the sound and ocean-especially breathtaking during autumn.

3. Explore Whalehead & Historic Corolla Park

Stroll through this Art Nouveau-era mansion and its lovely grounds, all nestled in Historic Corolla Park. It’s an architectural and scenic highlight of the area.

4. Go on a Wild Horse Tour

Take a wild horse tour to see and learn about the wild Banker horses. The tours are memorable and the knowledge that is shared by the horse tour guides about the wild horses and the area is interesting and invaluable. You may even see some dolphin while on your adventure!

5. Visit a wildlife refuge and do some birdwatching

Take the Currituck/Knotts Island Ferry over to Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge and experience a mosaic of habitats—marshes, dunes, forests—teeming with migratory birds, deer, and other wildlife, especially vibrant in fall.

6. Enjoy some fresh, local cuisine

Savor the flavors of fresh local catches like oysters, shrimp and crab or enjoy some of the famous Eastern North Carolina Barbeque…  Whatever your tastebuds are craving, you can find it here in the Northern Outer Banks.

7. Attend fall festivals & events

Don your sweater and join seasonal celebrations like Bulls & BBQ, a monster truck rally, a seafood festival with wine tastings, or settle in for a live concert at one of our music venues like Blue 42 or The Back 40 at Morris Farm Market.  All these events are rich with local flavors.

8. Visit a Farm Market

Stop by one of the many farm markets offering fresh, seasonal produce—pumpkins, apples, homemade pies, fudge, cider, and more… a true taste of fall.  While you’re there, go on a hayride.  Farm Markets are a fall tradition and a fun activity for the young and the young at heart.

9. Play a round of golf

Fall is the perfect time to tee-up and perfect your golf game; and with so many exceptional golf courses to choose from in the Northern Outer Banks, a round of golf with your buddies is a must do!  Plan a memorable afternoon or a weekend getaway!

10. Go kayaking, fishing or crabbing on Currituck Sound

With cooler temps and tranquil waters, fall is a wonderful time for paddling, casting a line, or crabbing in the peaceful expanse of the sound. While in Historic Corolla Park, don’t forget to explore the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education and the Currituck Maritime Museum.
