Safety Information
Your safety is our priority while you enjoy the beauty of Currituck County and Corolla’s stunning beaches. Whether you’re relaxing in the sand or exploring our waters, we want your visit to be as safe as it is memorable.
Please follow all posted rules and guidance from emergency personnel. In the event of a tropical storm or hurricane, real-time updates from Currituck County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service will be available on our website and social media channels.
For questions or assistance during your stay, please refer to the emergency contact information below or connect with local authorities at one of our public safety stations.
BEACH SAFETY GUIDELINES
Each year, thousands visit our beaches. Help us keep them clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone. Please help keep the beach safe and clean by removing all trash and personal items daily. Gear like tents, umbrellas, and chairs must be taken down by sunset or may be removed for public safety. Walking or driving on the dunes is prohibited, as is overnight camping. Fireworks and sky lanterns are illegal, and fires are only allowed in self-contained, portable pits with covers that should be removed from the beach nightly. Jet skis may only be used in the Currituck Sound, not on the ocean side. If you encounter dead animals or marine life, don’t touch — notify a lifeguard or beach patrol.

WILD HORSE SAFETY
We know the Corolla wild horses are a major attraction, but please remember to keep a minimum distance of 50 feet away. Never feed, pet, or approach the horses — this is enforced by County ordinance.
WATER SAFETY
Always swim near a lifeguard and avoid crowded or obstructed areas. Red flags mean swimming is prohibited due to dangerous conditions like rip currents. Surfers must use board tethers, and kayakers should wear life jackets. Refill any holes dug in the sand before leaving — they’re hazardous to others. If a wave crashes over you, stay calm: float or curl into a ball until it passes. For current conditions, visit NOAA’s Rip Current Forecast.

PET SAFETY
Dogs are welcome on the beach but must be leashed or under control, and waste must be cleaned up. Wear SPF 15+ sunscreen, avoid peak sun hours (10 AM–2 PM), and drink plenty of water. Keep an eye on kids and pets — shade breaks and hydration go a long way.
